The Chrysalids by John Wyndham

The Chrysalids by John Wyndham: this is science fiction at its best, relevant and enjoyable still even though it was published almost fifty years ago.

David Strorm lives in a community where genetic mutations are an every day part of life. Whenever these mutations occur (ranging from small differences like an extra toe or finger to the extreme like a two-headed calf), they are rooted out. In the case of livestock and crops they are destroyed and for those humans unlucky enough to deviate from the Divine Image of God, they are cast out of the community and sent to live in The Fringes.

David has the ability to communicate via telepathy, something he’s been able to hide for most of his life. However, as he gets older and the risks are more serious, it becomes inevitable that his secret will be found out.

I completely devoured this book, enjoying every minute of it. Despite that it was written almost fifty years ago, the language and people of the book were as fresh as if their stories had just been conceived.

I wish that Wyndham would have written a sequel to this book so that I could see how everyone’s lives played out and if information about The Tribulation was ever discovered (my money’s on nuclear war).

Great book and at just 200 pages, a perfect, quick read. Recommended for all, especially sci-fi fans.

I read this book for school and I actually enjoyed it. There were some parts that we, as a class, had to discuss so that we understood it. But I am not usually I lover of Science Fiction but this book was an exception. I encourage people to read this book.

the book was alright but the ending was kind of bad

I thought this book was an awsome read and that my teacher chose a good book other thatn one of the lame ones usually chosen!

My English 10 class just finished this book and are now doing projects for it. A lot of my classmates didn't like it I found it rather good. At the beginning I was having trouble getting into it but more towards the middle I got to the point where I didn't want to put it down. Then I got to the end and I was a little dissapointed because we never found out what happened to them??? Like seriously lol. I'm not a big sci fi fan but this was probably my favorite book of that genre. I agree that Mr. Wyndham should have written a sequal for those who are curious about what happened including me :P.

it was reallly good book. the ending was sooooo weird...

I found this book really hard to read, i think the author should have gotten to the point faster. What were some of Joseph Strorms 'life-time accomplishments'? and why did he have to die?

Posted by: on January 7, 2004 03:20 PM

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though it gets off to a fairly slow start, it's such a short book that it can be read almost as a short story. Once one is entangled in the plot, the book is very difficult to put down. The foreshadowing used throughout gives away just enough to make one curious, but not enough to give away any major events or plot twists. I also read this for my English 10 class, and am currently writing a short report on the book. I'm curious about how anyone could find the book overly difficult to read. Though some sections are slightly convoluted, one should be able to get at least the gist of any of these parts. The only trouble I'm having with my report is finding decent literary criticism pertaining to the book. I can't seem to find any sites with any decent reviews, and Google brings me nothing but freeessays.com sites. Any links to a decent Chrysalids webpage would be appreciated.

I'm reading "The Chrysalids" for school. I was searching for some information about this book, and I found this site. I must confess that it is a very weird book. I don't know if it is a good book, but so far I didn't really like it, so it's up to you if u want to read it or not. If you read it, i'll hope you'll enjoy it!!!

I beleive the book overall was good. As already said it did start off at a slow start but got more entertaining as i read farther on into the book. It raises great awarness of the many problems in our society today. However, i do need help for an essay which i have write about the book..i cant find any websites so help out everyone!

It was a good book, inspite the fact being that it did not have a perfect ending, but it was still good!

I read this book for Grade 9. It was a good book and it did have a perfect ending. It was interesting and reading about telepathy was really enthusiastic! I really liked that book and would encourage other people to read it too! Enjoy!

I had to read the Chrysalids for English 11 and I thought it was great until i got to the end... then I realised it was horrible... so if you like a good book... just read until the last few chapters!

I personally hated reading this damn book.... not that it was a bad book... but because I was forced to read it through english class... which I think is bullshit. Aside from that, it's an awesome book. I love how it deals with prejudice and and discrimination, things that are still everywhere in today's society. I forget where it is in the book, but Uncle Axel says "people are afraid of things that are different..." and it's SOOO true. Even today most people can't help but judge people by a physical feature. It's ridiculous.

Posted by: Heather on January 28, 2004 06:33 PM

The book was challenging to read due to the fact that they were so many long-winded conversations between Uncle Axel and David. Additionally there were some parts that could have been left out and some could have been put in like what was wrong with Aunt Harriet's baby : I was in suspense all through the book and some questions remained unanswered . However the book was good and i recommend it for a typical 14 year old

the book was ok.. it was kinda boring at the beginning, interesting in the middle.. and sucky at the end... itz ambiguous -_-;;

I've just read the book again for college, I first read it in my teens, and I still love it. Well worth a read.
It covers things that are still relivent today, such as non acepataince of anything that is different, and single mindedness of some people, that their own personal beliefs are all that matter.
The biggest lesson to be learned from the book is: "He who forgets history, is condoned to relive it." I only hope that this is not the cass for us!

I just read The Chrysalids for Grade 11 English, I loved this book. I didn't find it had a slow start at all, David meets Sophie right away. Nothing slow about that. I think the ending was perfect. At first, I thought it should have went further.. but really there was no need. They are off to the city, except micheal and Rachel. who will more then likley be rescued by Petra,David and Rosalind. Or so my ENG teacher says. Now I have to do any essay.. bah. Im doing it on
foreshadowing of the novel.
oh to answer a question "What were some of Joseph Strorms 'life-time accomplishments'? and why did he have to die?" He is now kinda replaced his father in waknuk, however instead of killing the deviations, he sterilizes them and bands them to the fringes. He is killed by his brother (spider man/Gordon). I think perhaps, it was revenge, spiderman leader of the fringes, and Joesph of waknuk. The fringes people have no food, and so they raid waknuk. Mabey the fact that Joesph turned his back on spiderman, and was now doing the same to his son, and daughter. I don't know.. just my thoughts.

I hate this book... our teacher makes up to all these gay exercises and likw 20 vocab. words for every chapter!!! Its really boring and reminds me of the Giver, which sucked, tooo!!!!! URGGG!!! i dont want to read this damm book!!!

Damnnn what a great book. I am not use to reading all through of a book. I normally get bored by the 5th chapter. But with this book there is action in all chapters. I just kept reading and reading and reading and then cried at the end cause I had finished reading the book an I wanted more.

man when you stared to read this book in english 10 i thouhg this was going to be a boring book to read. i enjoyed how john made the characters change in the book from a young age to a teenager just like me. the book was written almost 50 years ago but it seems like its here when the threat of nuclear war is at hand. he really made me think alot more then i did before about our world and how we think and do things in out society now. i would of loved to see a sequel to the story to find out how they shape out at the end and how they fit in to the new people. but one thing to piont out. at the end of the book they said somthing about the spider web and how it trapped and killed mutans and norms. this shows that no matter what we do we will always kill other in hudge numbers and dont care. this make me think back when the nazis killed millions and when americans nuked the japs. what will our future turn out to be. is it true we will all be wiped out?

oh god.. i can't seem to get in this book.. im in 8th grade and the whole class is reading it.. i jsut can't get into it.. and i find it real boring except for the fact.. that it does realte in many ways wich todays society, other then that i hate it ( even thou im not exactly finished the book).

I really hated this book at the beginning but now that I am almost finished (10 or so more pages) I actually like it.!!! I think that is good because it is focusing on predujuces. (That is what it seems like) Aand even though it is Sci-Fi, it shows how bad our world could get if we keep living with predujuces. I normally find Sci-Fi really really weird and stupid but this book was different for me. I am only in Grade 7, but I think anyone with a high reading level can read it!!! (^_^)

Posted by: Bam on March 29, 2004 10:02 PM

The first time I picked up the book and started to read it, one thing was clear to my mind, yet not so much. I did not understand why the beginning was immersing me with the quotes from the bible and the 'image of god.' But I soon figured out why, and I did indeed enjoy this book. Out of thirty people in my english class, only two read it. And I believe that I was the only one that had an idea of what was going on at the end. It was wonderfully well-written, and there is no doubt in my mind that it will be read and enjoyed by more generations to come.

i have no idea what is wrong with you people who hated it, but i loved this book. it describes so much what has continued on to today's society, that it almost worries me. i am not normally a sci-fi person, but this book was absolutely amazing. this should be a requirement for everyone, because it really makes you think where society could be headed. perhaps a few un-named polititians should read it...

Hi,
I am from Barbados and we did the book for class and it s totally cool. When I started to read it, I couldn't stop on till i was finished. This book had me totally had me hooked. My entire class liked it. Although they were certain parts that were really weird...but we discussed it together until we understood what had happened.
I would highly recommend that everyone read it and those who didn't like it needs a life.

I thought the book was unlike anything I have ever read. Personally, I also want John to make sequal. At first I wasn't excited about reading it for english class, but the good reviews from my parents kind of persuaded me. I thought the book was great. I definitely want to read more of john's stuff.

I read The Chrysalids for my english class like many of the other people who left comments, and I thought it was a fantastic novel. John Wyndham was deffinately ahead of his time and did a great job with the comparison between Waknuk and our own society. It can really open our eyes to some of our flaws and I highly recomend reading it.

She justs assumes that it was a nuclear war that killed the "old people" (us) That casued the mutations and stuff. Its going to get interesting. From reading the comments i am now aware that Joseph storm dies, and am very happy about that because hes mean! lol

Posted by: ally on October 7, 2004 02:59 PM

Have to read this book for Eng 9. We got five pages of questions on this book!!! SOme of them are easy but im stuck on this one: (Chapter 17) How does the N.Z. woman justify what happens to all the fringes and normal people as she landed? What insight ful observation does she make about the fate of her own race in the distant future? Does this insight support religious or scientific views on creation? WTF?!!

Over all the book was...alright. I pretty much hate sci-fi and this was no exception. Just glad that its short. This book sounds really modern though its written fifty yrs ago. I think it should at least have a epilogue if not sequel. There are a lot of stuff to ponder on too, like wat the woman said about "The essential quality of life is living, the essential quality of living is change, change is evolution: and we are part of it.

I really enjoyed The Chrysalids. I found that even though it had a lot of little comments, I knew that, they gave a lot of information. Basically, the overall story was thrilling, and I really enjoyed it. The ending, was okay. Although I don't really enjoy being left hanging, I found that if it had gone on any longer, that the book would have been ruined. We are writing an In-Character Diary in My Grade 10 English class, and I am looking forward to it. I found that the characters were very thrilling, and added a lot of suspence, through-out the whole story.

Posted by: Amzy on December 1, 2004 04:40 PM

The Chrysalids is an eye opener, there is no doubt about that. It had a solid, realistic plot that related to our everyday society and Government. Each chapter was kept short and kept true to itself, almost keeping one on the edge of their seat. I personally enjoyed the ending, it leaves you open to your personal idea of what could then happen. Well all in all I enjoyed it and would like to see it made into a movie one day. Yeah, that'd be chill. Peace.

Posted by: Infinitum Demonstrandum on December 1, 2004 06:19 PM

The novel thee chrysalids would be a good book if the author took it down to 50 paes instead of talking on and on about God knows what!!! The first time the book ever thought about being interesting was close to chapter 17, that is way to long!!!

Posted by: Jason H on December 1, 2004 06:56 PM

I just finished reading chrysalids for my english class and i thought it was a good book. it was very slow at times and the author rambled on alot but i sill enjoyed it. however i did not like the ending at all there are to many things left unresolved. but i thought it was a good book and i liked that it was a short novel.

Posted by: Lolliepop on December 1, 2004 08:23 PM

The Waknuk society has banished mostly everything from their society that is not made in their concept of the true image. I feel that this is significant within the novel because it symbolizes many things. In our own history of mankind some groups have always reacted negatively towards different groups. I also found it strange that regardless of their strong beliefs and attitude for the true image that they introduced the great horses into their society because they are beneficial to their community. That made me question a lot of things in the book and it really got me thinking. Basically the society setting double standards and that is an international issue that we are still dealing with today. There is also an eccentricity carried throughout the novel about Waknuk’s society.

Posted by: patrick on December 1, 2004 09:22 PM

This book started off on such a slow pace that it took me soo long to get it into that i got way behind in class, (as i am reading it in my tenth grade academic english class). This novel also shows some what of how we react towards certain things in real life, and today. We show alot of negative responses to those who are homosexual, bi-sexual and lesbian. This should be tolerable, yet many deem it necessary to try and demolish those who are. I think its digusting, however, this book shows that these negative ways wont be around for long. I liked the middle of this book and there needs to be a sequel because the ending was atrocious. That was the worst way to leave someone hanging. I mean you dont know how they ended up, or if rachel and micheal came to live in that land or not. That was dissapointing as was the beginining, the middle was exceptional and i liked it.

Posted by: Krystal on December 2, 2004 09:47 AM

I enjoyed this book very much! I believe it was well written and i found myself always wanting to read on. At times i could not even put this book down because there is always something happening. John Wyndham is an excellent writer and now i would like to read more of his novels.

Posted by: brit2004 on December 2, 2004 08:22 PM

I thought the book was OK. It was a fairly intresting book with a unique story line but certain parts of it (i.e. the flight to the fringes) got boring. As for the ending, it was very unpredictable and extremely unique and intelligent. I think the over all story line was excellent.

Posted by: gradetenstudent on December 2, 2004 11:48 PM

Overall, I thought this book was very good. My grade 10 English class has just finished reading it, and we are working on an In-Character diary. I found that at the beginning of the book, it was hard to understand what it was about, and the title being, ‘The Chrysalids,’ I thought it would have been about something completely different. Some chapters towards the middle were really well written and created suspense to the point where I did not want to put the book down. Then, there were those chapters that were not interesting at all, and could only be described as boring! The end is a very good display of suspense, but I think that there should have been a sequel to follow. I also felt there were some parts in the book that were completely pointless. Sci fi novels are not really my favourite genre, but this book was very good in my opinion. The book has many lessons and morals relating to our society today. (I.e prejudice, discrimination, etc.) It is an amazing story, and I strongly recommend it!

Posted by: Kiersten on December 4, 2004 12:12 PM

I didnt really find this book very interesting. Im more into comedy or action pact books. This is only my oppinion though so dont take my word for it.

Posted by: kevin Martin on December 6, 2004 02:37 PM

i though this book was verry interesting. it dealt with many conflicts that go on today, and in the past. i read it for a grade ten assignment, and i didnt think it was going to be a good book at first, but my oppinion changed when i started to read it. i got hooked on the book and was asked by the student teacher to stop reading it, because i wasnt taking part in the class activity. the only thing i didn't like about this book was the ending, because it just leaves you hanging without knowing alot about this "Sealand" society, other than the people are very accepting of one another, and most people have "though-shapes"

Posted by: mark the mullet man on December 6, 2004 03:15 PM

I read "The Chrysalids" as a novel study for my Grade 10 Emglish Class. Right off, I knew that it was in the genre of Science Fiction, and honestly I don't really like Science Fiction. But then we started comparing "The Chrysalids" to "X-Men" because the plots are similar in comparison.
The beginning of the book was really slow at first but then it got exciting, I learned to feel sympathy for the characters and I could picture what was happening in the story in my mind.
Some of the chapters are tedious and long and they dread on for numerous pages but overall the story was okay, it had its ups and downs. Overall, I would say from Chapter 10-17 were the most exciting chapters. The ending went out with a bang but it left the readers in the middle, it would be nice if there happened to be a sequel to this book but I think that it is better off as a single novel. But I wouldn't re-read this novel for fun.

Posted by: baybee_gurl89 on December 6, 2004 03:38 PM

I have just finished reading the Chrysalids novel for my grade ten english class. I do not know what novel my peers read... But the novel I read was interesting throughout. To whoever posted the comment about it being to long... its a novel and your in grade ten... its not going to be 50 pages. It had to get to the point eventually because otherwise it would have been uniteresting and flat. Its like saying this- There is a boy named David, he has powers, he can communicate with others in his mind. He loves his cousin Rosalind (a little gross). His sister Petra is born. She has powers too! And so on... There would be no plot, if they got right to the point! I have never read a science fiction book before, therefore, I cannot judge it as good or bad. I belive that it was well written, interesting and frilly. It was frilly because it contained a little romance, interesting because it kept my attention and well written becasue I as a student could follow it. Well done Wyndham!
Unlike Shakespeare.. oh joy.. its next!

I didnt like this book one bit, First off the author didnt get to the point, it was like watching a boring soap opera about people casually talking about things that i could, for one, care less about. If i didnt have to read this for a class novel i wouldnt read past the 3rd page, it was horrible and the most uninteresting book, although imaginative the writer should have used some of his imagination to write a book that at least 1 out of 10 people would like reading (ahem Melissa) but anyways that is my opinion and i have a feeling a lot more peoples opinion, at least of those who i have talked about it to. but anyways im off to go do somehting to make up for the waste of time i had while reading the Chrysalids.

I have read alot of books and usually the books are really boring at the beginning, this one i liked. This book was exciting and kept me interested from beginning to end. The story line was really good and John Wyndhams way of putting it and explaining it was well done. I disagree with everyone who didnt like this book, keiran l!

im 13 and my class read this book. its actually pretty good for a sci-fi novel. although some of the questions we had to do for class were pretty pointless...but good book maybe 4 stars

Posted by: megan on March 8, 2005 03:41 PM

Science fiction demands a certain suspension of disbelief on the readers part. But gerally, science fiction has a healthy respect for facts. THe crysalids maintains this respect. There are only two assumptions: that the nuclear holocaust took place t odestory civilization as we know it, and that certain members of Waknuk can communicate through mental telopathy. The Chrysails is remarkable, although the ending was most definitly far fetched, and went down hill, to end the book they left mostly all of us wondering whats going to or what did happend to David and the others, I think that there should be a sequence to the novel with a better ending, and more out spoken about what happens to Those who have deviations, and the group of Davids friends.

This book was very slow in the begginging and many of the students in year 10 extension class couldnt understand the story. Iam yet to finish this book as i do not particularly like the story line. The author needs to get to the point quicker.

I liked the way that The Chrysalids characters are so fatally tragic at times. like when David and Rosalind can't be together because of their feuding families. or when Sophie and her family are so discriminated and harrased when they are really lovely people. I thoought the ending was a bit too dull but the story was an engoyable read

literally THE worst book i have yet to read for english class. it was a dread to read, and alot of it was unclear. the text and titles had little to do with each other. what can i say? i'll be happy to get it ocer and done with.

i hate the everyone is so negative about the book .. i though it ended quickly but aside from that it was soo brilliant .. one quesion though .. is it a nuclear war ? or something else .. i need to know when it took place for my big project .. its so stressfull .. this is one aspect of reading that angers me

Posted by: me on April 6, 2005 03:59 PM

I don't understand how people can say the beginning started out badly. It sets up the society showing you what kind of beliefs they have, and how they firmly stick by them, even though the government is allowing more and more deviations to exist. I don't really understand the sci-fi portion of the book, the mutants were more or less caused by the "tribulation" which was most likely a nuclear war. Other than that, it takes place in quite a primitive society. The fact that the mutants themselves were not hideously deformed really apealed to me. It shows how devout the people of Waknuk were in their belief of the true image. The end was one of the best parts for me, it was foreshadowed with the calls Petra could hear, and also showed that this new and better society, while possibly learning from some errors of the "old people" (us), are arrogant in their belief that they have the right idea. I also really enjoyed the fringe people. People who say this book sucked obviously don't enjoy literature that deals with god and predjudism, or they just didn't understand the book.

p.s. Was waknuk in the U.S.A and was Zealand actually New Zealand?

Posted by: me on April 6, 2005 05:02 PM

Also, on request that there should have been a sequel I disagree. The book already touched down on the facts of the society and how they live and believe. Unless there was some sort of disagreement in morals and beliefs with Rosalind, David, and Petra compared to Zealand, then there wouldnt be much more to touch on. The reader is left with the assumption that Michael and Rachel either make it, or die after leaving Waknuk(my personal belief). I think Wyndham left this book on a good note, leaving some to the readers imagination, but also describing all the events the reader needed to know. The book more or less deals with the morals and beliefs, rather than the adventure of the main characters (in my opinion), and it is a very good book for that.

this book sucks. the ending is tainted. they run away from this society that like YOU GOTTA BE LIKE THIS to another thats like IF YOURE NOT LIKE US YOU SUCK. what a change. *rolls eyes*

Posted by: pro on April 14, 2005 07:44 PM

I really thoroughly enjoyed this book. I did it for grade 10 english. I agree woth most people that the beginnigng wasn't the best, but it was setting up the book and all the facts on what came in handy to know later on. It really does need a sequel, the ending is way too short.
Some questions relating, Do Rachel and Michael get rescued? What becomes of Petra? Do Rosalind and David get married? Is the marriage of cousins accepted in their new culture?
Some facts our teacher told us: Waknuk "Labrador", is in Canada, but the surrounding waters of Labradr are the seas of New Zealand. I don't get how Wyndham thought that up!

I'm reading the chrysalids for English 10 and I really like it. Just I'm doing a lit review about it now and one of the things we're supposed to write about is the significance of the title....I realy cant figure out what the significance is. Does anyone know?

Notice how everyone who says the book sucks is talking with words like 'U' and 'like' which means theyre probably younger.
It's strange that this is a novel read in high school cause younger kids just don't seem to get it. It's a amazing piece of writing, I loved every bit of it from beginning to end.

"p.s. Was waknuk in the U.S.A and was Zealand actually New Zealand?"

to answer your question, Waknuk was in Canada. In Labrador which is up by Newfoundland and all those places, and yes...Sealand was New Zealand.

I am now reading the book for CXC(Caribbean Examination Council) , so far my knowledge of the book is that it was base on people wanted to be free ,to be who they are and so had to keep they differences a secret because they lived in a society that demaned perfection and thus being if any one who exsisted that does not comply with they exspectation of what an individual OR something ( in general ) was , it was said to be abomonation in the sight of god .
The society actually thought that they were the true image of god and fear anything that was different

Posted by: Erwin Scott on May 16, 2005 09:44 PM

i read the book, very nice! I have a question maybe someone can answer:
WHAT IS THE EXPLANATION OF THE TITLE?

Posted by: Sorbo on May 17, 2005 08:58 AM

The meaning of the title... my teacher explained it, and I think its rather well thought
Chrysalis: A protected stage of development.
Chrysalis represents change... something new, something developed.
Chrysalids.. .the group of 'thought-shapers'. They are changing from the old group of Waknuk, they are new, different. They ARE change, and thus, the title.

i must say i've read this book in summer school and in class right now. for a sc-fi book it's okay, but it jumps all over the place, and it gets worse and even worser towards the end. the start is fine, but the end is a disaster. i really don't get why we have to read this book. i think john wyndham was nuts.

Posted by: Rachel on May 29, 2005 04:04 PM

very good book
was slow at the start, but the climax running through the end of the book was very well written.

I just finished reading Chrysalids for English 10. I really didn't like it and I am a regular sci-fi/fantasy reader. It was horrid. I just didn't like it. The world there was so stupid and unrealistic it wasn't even funny. Now, as for the title of the book (saw a comment up there) Chrysalids is the same as chrysalis, which does represent the developing and changing stage in an organism's life cycle. The idea was that when things resist the change, they die, as the people of both Waknuk and Fringes society did in the end. Some of the main aspects may have been true, but they were portrayed very retardedly... We just did an essay in class and I'm glad to say that IT'S OVER!

I just finisshed reading this book for grade 10 english book was pretty decent I must say all except for the fact that we dont really know wether mark dies or lives that's really the only thing that I did'nt like about the book but yea other than that it was pretty good and it was a book that really made you think about discrimination towards different things

Posted by: JOE on June 7, 2005 06:25 PM

ok so i had to read this book for my grade 9 english class. I liked it even tho im not really into the whole Sci-fi thing... It started out really slow and boring, and the ending was kinsa shit but i had to keep reading it when i got to the middle, the only part that i dont like is how you dont know if mark is dead and the fact that they would not go back for Rachel, if they traveled that far so quick then wouldn't it only take them a day to go and get Rachel if they flew??? Other than that is was good but... Why did i have to read it if im only in Grade 9 english and everyone else is in grade 10 :( NOT FAIR!!

Posted by: Kristen on June 12, 2005 11:33 AM

the most boring book in the beginnig but loved the end =)

Posted by: dont watch that on June 13, 2005 07:39 PM

this was a really decent novel paradoxically set in the future but the characters remain in the past. it was a good sci fi book because it wasn't totally outrageous but displayed possibilities. telepathy is being researched everyday and of course a nueclear holocaust could occur. this book was believable. i also read it for my grade 10 english and i agree that there should be a sequel. wyndam left numerous fans hanging at the end with how new zealand will be and if mark and rachel will make it back. for those who dont like it they should just try to have an open mind!

Posted by: kaleigh on June 16, 2005 09:53 PM

The book is great, and is an example of John Wyndhams class in making the characters seem fresh, relevant and just as beleivable despite the book being written over 50 years ago. The book raises lots of questions and messages with perhaps the main one regarding the persucution of people, simply because they dont conform to what people perceive as normal. This situation is just as relevant today, and this book can teach people a lesson!

Posted by: Tom on July 28, 2005 10:25 AM

this book is the most boring book in the world you can get

Posted by: unna on August 11, 2005 04:58 AM

I dont think a sequal would be a good idea. Now they've got Petra they wont bother comming back for the other two. They will probabely be caught by people from Waknuk out for revenge.

Petra will probabley have to train hard for hours and hours to develop her control over her thought shapes, and then have to teach all the Sealanders, becase she is so much better at it than them.

They will probbably want her to breed with their best thought shaper men, too. So that future Sealanders will be even better at it.

the Chrysalids was written in the 1950's during the period of McCarthyism it is an allegory for the build up of arms between the usa and the soviet union. Also during McCarthyism people were heavily discriminated against if they showed any "comunist tendancys" also see "Day of the triffids" or is sequel "night of the triffids" also by Wyndham you may have an interest in "the crucible" by Arthur Miller

Posted by: michael on August 24, 2005 07:50 AM

No!

Night of The Triffidds is NOT by Jhon Windham. Its by Simon Clark
I dont agree aout the alegorry. Show us your arguments for it, michal

This was a very wierd book. Very odd, and nobody in my grade 9 english class get what it mean. It is very boring and I can seem to get into the book. I read a paragraph and I just have to put it down.

Posted by: Derek on November 6, 2005 09:07 PM

First read The Chrysalids when it was published in the US by the SciFi Book Club as Rebirth in the late 50s. Loved it then. Have read it a number of times since, and love it still.

Have always wondered about Waknuk and with internet access these days, decided to check it out. What a great surprise to find that many of today's teens are loving it also.

Guess that's what turns a good book into a classic -- it transcends the generations.

Other books you might enjoy are Azimov's foundation series and Zenna Henderson's books about "the People."

I had to read the book for school but i enjoyed it. Its a very good and enjoyable book at the beginning you may not think so but keep reading!! It gets better. It really sends a message for what really is 'the norm' do we really know? And how much ppl are judged for something that may be the true image.......

This book was actually really interesting. Got me thinking about how our society operates and about the effects of nuclear war.

I loved the suspense and the mystery that this book gave; however, I was dissapointed with the ending. I thought it ended sort of abruptly, and we don't get to read on about David, Petra, and Rosalind's lives.

I guess a lot of good books that I have read all end without informing the reader about an idealistic happy ending. It just leaves more to the reader's imagination.

Posted by: Jo on January 24, 2006 07:50 PM

I have to say.. I've read alot of books. Mainly for my classes. I am a science ficton fan Sortof. But the Chrysalids was the most boring book i've ever read in my life. Some parts were really really boring and if i didnt have to read it for class i would have stopped within reading the first 10 pages. I was so bored when Uncle Axel started talking about the Badlands in different places other than Waknuk. However by the end i was pretty emersed in the plot. I guess youllhave to read it yourself and see what you think.

Posted by: studys on February 11, 2006 05:57 PM

Probably one of the better school issued novels that i've read. Like everyone else has said the ending is terrible. I mean, they're hinting that Michael and Rachael could somehow reach New Zealand when it takes forever just by plane. What the hell is that...

Posted by: Jeff on February 11, 2006 10:48 PM

This is a real cool book..i love it but since we are doing it as a novel in school I'm finding troubles. I still like it though kids in my class don't (probably they are all stupid amd don't understand the book) hehe..joking. I AM sad because the author has passed away. Iwould reallyof lved to meet him. John Wyndham..greatest science fiction writer. Thought the ending is sad because Michael stays back to get Rachel. Anyways..it still is a great book.
